04 Apr 2020 An update on the 2020 Maine Democratic Party State Convention
Thank you all for your patience as we’ve considered our plans for the Maine Democratic Party State Convention. We’re writing to let you know that in light of guidance from State and local officials responsible for protecting public health and safety, we’ve made the difficult, but necessary, decision to cancel our in-person State Convention that was set to take place May 29-30 in Bangor.
Our top priority has always been to ensure the health of safety of our delegates, candidates, elected officials, guests, and staff. Unfortunately, this public health crisis doesn’t allow for an in-person gathering of Maine Democrats.
However, while it’s no longer possible to hold our in-person State Convention, we have received approval from the DNC to hold remote elections for National Delegates, Presidential Electors, and DNC representatives. We will also be holding remote elections for Democratic State Committee members. We’ll have more information to share on the remote voting process in the near future, but know that we are making accommodations for State Delegates to join online and by phone to ensure accessibility regardless of broadband internet access. The process for ratifying the MDP Charter and Platform will be determined at a later date.
Our duty to protect one another requires that we make changes to the way we interact with our friends, families, and communities. While our campaign tactics may be evolving, our mission has not changed.
This unexpected, turbulent time is a stark reminder of why we need steady leadership–leaders that will listen to experts, follow science, and always prioritize protecting our families above all else. That reminder has only steeled our resolve to elect Democrats up and down the ballot.
That’s why the Maine Democratic Party is working on a plan to rally Democrats across the state together in new and creative ways, doing our part to generate the momentum and excitement we need to win this November.
We know many of you have had questions about our plans, and we want to once again thank you for your patience as we all learn how to navigate these unprecedented times.
Thanks for all that you do.
