Kennebec River Area Democrats Want Licensed Counselor to Fix Augusta
CHELSEA, Maine, July 16, 2024–Democrats from Chelsea, Dresden, Pittston and Randolph crowded into the Chelsea Elementary cafeteria Monday night, July 15, to nominate Judith “Judy” Tunkle from Dresden as their candidate for the November 5 general election against Republican Michael Lemelin of Chelsea in House District 53.
Tunkle is a retired Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and has served as the chair of the Dresden Broadband & Technology Committee to bring internet and cell phone connectivity to Lincoln County.
The candidate commented at the event, “That is what I want to do now. I want to learn who you all are and how we can find or develop a path that will improve the well being for all of us. I don’t want to see winners and I don’t want to see losers. I want to see ways that can be found for all of us to have our lives improved.”
State Rep. Allison Hepler (D-Woolwich) who represented Dresden from 2018-2022 prior to decennial redistricting attended the Monday night caucus and commented, “I got to know Judy when I was campaigning to represent Dresden in the State House, which I was lucky to do for four years. Judy has been an advocate and organizer to improve Dresden’s broadband infrastructure and did so while listening to and working with a variety of voices and perspectives. She will do the same for the towns she is running to represent in House District 53. She is a listener and a collaborator and she will represent them well. I can’t wait to see her energy and talent put to use in the State House!”
Judy and her husband Paul have raised three children who have lived in and out of Maine since the 1970s. Paul is a regular priest at six parishes in the midcoast throughout the year.
