Governor Janet Mills

Gov. Mills is running for her second term as governor. Born and raised in rural Maine, Janet Mills is the first woman governor of Maine. In her historic 2018 victory, she earned more votes than any governor in state history and is the first governor since 1966 to win a majority of the vote for a first term. As Governor, she has led Maine through a global pandemic with nation-leading results and is now leading Maine to a strong economic recovery. Under her leadership, Maine’s unemployment rate has dropped below 3%, Maine has recovered all of the jobs lost during the pandemic, and the state’s economic growth has been 11th best in the nation during her time in office. Working with Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, she delivered one of the strongest inflation relief measures in the country, sending $850 to nearly all Maine taxpayers. She has also expanded health care to more than 90,000 people, fully funded schools for the first time in Maine history, restored municipal revenue sharing, raised the minimum teacher salary, delivered free community college, and increased the Rainy Day Fund to a record-high $897 million. Through her Maine Jobs & Recovery Plan, she is now focused on addressing Maine’s long-standing workforce shortage, investing millions of dollars in job training programs and initiatives to build more housing. Gov. Mills has been endorsed by a number of organizations, include the Maine AFL-CIO, Maine Service Employees Association-SEIU Local 1989; Maine Education Association, EqualityMaine, Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund, and League of Conservation Voters. She is running against former Gov. Paul LePage, a Republican of Edgecomb, and Sam Hunkler, an independent of Beals Island.
