About Andrea LaFlamme

Andrea LaFlamme is running as a write-in candidate.

I’m a feminist public health professor that has spent her life fighting for the underdog in Maine’s communities. No one recruited me to run for office; I’m running for U.S. Senate because I know what Mainers need and right now, I don’t see those needs being met by our current leadership or candidates. I’m the daughter of a Marine and was married to an Army medic during his wartime deployment to Afghanistan. I’m a product of Maine’s public schools and stayed here to get my masters’ degree in public health because my goal has always been to serve the community; I’m a teacher, an advocate, and a public health expert looking to make a difference.

I’m the only candidate in this race that’s an elected union leader—I’m a chapter president with MSEA-SEIU Local 1989 where I represent adjunct professors at all of Maine’s Community Colleges. As chapter president, I recently helped our members secure 4% annual raises from management. Before that, I was elected as the youngest president in the history of Mabel Wadsworth Center (a local health center providing abortion care) where I championed their expansion of services to include care for trans folks and people of all genders. Mabel Wadsworth Center is the only private, not-for-profit, free-standing feminist health center in Maine.

I’ve spent decades working in education and municipal health, experience that sets me apart from the other candidates in this race. I’m a proven leader and community advocate that has put in the work, so you can trust that I’m going to keep fighting for you in the U.S. Senate.

Platform Issues:

I’m a grassroots, progressive candidate that believes in:

HEALTHCARE:
-Medicare for All: comprehensive care for everyone that includes dental, vision, and mental health care
-Strengthening our public health network: protecting our communities and preventing future illness and injury
-Abortion is healthcare: restoring the right to abortion and expanding access to care. This includes eliminating the Hyde Amendment.
-Trans rights are human rights. Period.

ECONOMIC:
-Increasing the minimum wage to reflect a true living wage
-Taxing billionaires to fund social programs and infrastructure improvements
-Accountability and consequences for the companies that are destroying our environment and big banks that are robbing our students and working families.
-Ending our support of those guilty of committing genocide and war crimes

SOCIAL:
-Prison reform: people shouldn’t be getting rich from the incarceration of others and inmates should not be used as slave labor. This includes revising the 13th amendment.
-Ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment: all people should have equal rights under the law.
-Abolish ICE
-Tribal sovereignty: native tribes deserve our support and respect
-Expanding resources for our service members, veterans, and their families

ENVIRONMENTAL:
-Supporting the passage of the Green New Deal
-Increasing protection and support for our National Parks system

Priorities in Office

My focus has been and always will be to fight for my community. The working class needs someone who will stand up and represent them—someone who can’t be bought and is unwavering in their fight for what’s right—I am that person.
