15 May 2025 Democrats Must Reclaim Patriotism — Loudly and Proudly
A note from our Chair, Keith Mestrich: It’s time for Democrats to stop ceding the flag. Patriotism is not the property of any one party — but in today’s America, it’s Democrats who most consistently live out its meaning. We should say that, clearly and proudly.
True patriotism isn’t performative. It’s not about waving flags bigger than your neighbor’s or chanting “USA!” louder. It’s about showing up for one another, defending the rule of law, protecting democracy, expanding rights, and striving — always — toward a more perfect union. Those are the values embedded in our founding documents. And those are the values Democrats should unapologetically champion.
We’re the party that defends voting rights and the peaceful transfer of power. We’re the party that believes your freedom of speech and right to protest are just as American as your right to worship or own property. We’re the party that believes love of country means caring for your neighbors, investing in your schools, lifting up working people, and never turning your back on someone because they’re poor, sick, or different.
We believe in facts. In science. In truth. Not because they’re partisan, but because democracy can’t function without them. We believe that no one — not a president, not a billionaire, not a judge — is above the law. That’s not just good policy. That’s patriotism.
We don’t tear down institutions to score points. We fight to make them stronger, more inclusive, more just. We don’t traffic in fear and resentment. We lead with hope and responsibility. We don’t shout others down. We listen, we debate, and we move forward together.
Democrats believe in an America that tells the truth about its past — including its sins — because real patriots don’t flinch from history. We confront it so we can build something better. We don’t ban books or muzzle teachers. We empower citizens to think, speak, and act freely — because that’s the American way.
If we want to win people to our side, we need to remind them: we love this country. Deeply. Fiercely. Actively. We believe in the Constitution — not as a prop, but as a living commitment. We believe in this country’s promise — and we’re willing to fight for it, not just for ourselves but for everyone who calls America home.
We should plant our flag in that belief. Wave it high. Not to divide, but to invite. To show Americans — including those who’ve drifted or lost faith — that patriotism lives here. That it beats in the heart of every teacher, nurse, soldier, organizer, voter, and public servant who believes we rise together or not at all.
So yes, let’s be proud Democrats. But even more than that, let’s be proud Americans. Because loving this country doesn’t mean ignoring its flaws. It means working, every day, to help it live up to its highest ideals. That’s patriotism. That’s our legacy. And that’s how we build the future — united, determined, and unafraid.
