About Janet Mills
Born and raised in rural Maine, Janet has been breaking barriers her entire career, serving as Maine’s first woman District Attorney, first woman Attorney General, and first woman Governor.
Janet has spent her life fighting for Maine. As District Attorney, she fought domestic abusers. As Attorney General, she took on predatory corporations and Big Pharma companies who fueled the opioid crisis.Â
As Governor, Janet expanded health care access to more than 100,000 people, driving down Maine’s uninsured rate. She continued to deliver meaningful progress from expanding child care, housing, and broadband, to providing free community college, enacting universal free school meals, and fully funded public schools for the first time in Maine history.Â
With climate change already impacting Maine, she took action, investing in renewable energy and setting Maine’s first 100 percent renewable energy goal. Janet protected and expanded access to abortion and ensured doctors can provide it without fear of prosecution. And when Donald Trump threatened to take funding away from our kids just to score political points, Janet Mills took him to court — and won.
Janet is the only Democrat to win statewide in the last 20 years, and she won both those elections with a majority—the only Governor to do so in 50 years, making her the best positioned to run against Susan Collins. Janet is ready to beat Susan Collins, stand up to Donald Trump, protect our democracy, deliver results for working families, and give Maine people the strong voice they deserve in the Senate.Â
Platform Issues:
- Health Care: I expanded health care in Maine but Trump’s policies, enabled by Susan Collins, are driving up health care costs. Health care is a right, not a privilege. That’s why I will fight for universal health care.Â
- Housing: Home ownership is inaccessible for too many. I made the largest investment in housing in Maine’s history and will fight in Washington to build more housing and support first-time homebuyers and renters.
- Child care: While I’ve expanded child care in Maine, it’s still too expensive and inaccessible. Washington must expand the Child Care Tax Credit and provide more child care subsidies to ensure working families don’t break the bank on child care.
- Education: I am the first Governor in Maine history to fully fund the state’s share of education, and I will fight back against the Trump Administration’s war on public education.Â
- Climate Change: As governor, I made climate action a priority, and I will fight to restore the Trump Administration’s cancellations of clean energy projects and tax credits. Â
- Reproductive Rights: After Susan Collins’ pivotal vote for Justice Kavanaugh led to the destruction of Roe, I protected and expanded reproductive rights. I will take this fight to Washington to restore nationwide abortion rights and expand access to contraception.
Priorities in Office
I will fight on two fronts:
- Fight back against Trump to protect Maine and fix a broken Congress by instituting term limits, reforming the filibuster, banning Congressional stock trading, and overturning Citizens United.Â
- Deliver for Maine people by reversing Trump’s cuts to Medicaid, fighting for universal health care, increasing housing production, building an economy that benefits working people, expanding child care, restoring federal protections for abortion, and more.Â
I’m running for one term: unlike others in Washington, I won’t have to spend time raising money for reelection. Instead, I’ll be focused on one thing: delivering for you.
