The Maine Democratic Party Platform is our statement of core values, that guides us in all we do

As the Democratic National Convention of 2020 comes to a close, we, as Democrats, come away from this event with great hope. We believe in people, the nature of democracy, and believe that our own actions working for the kind of country, the kind of politics and governance, and the world we will leave will be deserved by future generations.

This is also a good time to look at the 2020 Maine Democratic Party Platform that was adopted during our own virtual convention last month. The product of many hours of work by many people across the state. I thank Kelli Whitlock Burton of Waldoboro and Indriani Demers of Wiscasset for joining me in representing Lincoln County on the Democratic State Committee’s platform committee.

Nothing involving the work and compromise of many people is perfect. Yet, this platform is an excellent statement of the people-focused beliefs of Democrats in Maine. I am proud of what the Platform of Maine Democrats says about our belief in our country, constitution, community, and the rights which all people should enjoy. These are trying times for all of us who value our humanity. Our ancestors gave their lives to protect this and other nations from oppression and fascism. Our constitution, our balance of power, our respect in the world, are all gravely diminished by a president who has repeatedly made clear he respects none of these things.

It is time for all patriots to renew our oath to what truly makes a nation great. As in the Declaration of Independence which Abraham Lincoln called “a rebuke and a stumbling-block to tyranny and oppression,” the Maine Democratic Platform calls upon all of us to restore the greatness of power reserved to the People. Not an aristocracy, not a monarchy, not the fascist regime and police state into which President Trump is rapidly reshaping this country.

I’ve said many times that we must elect people who believe in what we believe in. It is time for all people, regardless of their party or unenrolled status, to put country before party, to defend our constitution, and to stand up for our values as a people.

In that spirit, I invite you to read the values expressed by the 2020 Maine Democratic Party Platform. These are my values too.
