Vote Absentee by Mail

Now-Nov 5

  • Request your absentee ballot (before Oct. 31 but we suggest before Oct. 18) by completing an online form here or by calling your Town Clerk (see below).
  • Once received, mark your ballot, place it in its envelope, sign the back (REQUIRED)
  • Return it by mail (the Secretary of State’s Office recommends to post it by Friday, Oct. 25, In Maine, being postmarked on Nov. 5 is not acceptable.)
    OR
  • Return it to your town clerk (see below for hours and drop box locations) before 8 PM on Election Day, Nov. 5.

PROS

It’s a great option if your schedule is unknown and if there is a storm or you experience a personal event, you may not make it to the polls. If you are home, you may take your completed ballot to the town clerk or put it in your town’s ballot drop box, if available (see below). You may also take your time because there are also 5 questions on this ballot to answer (see below).

Vote Absentee in Person (Early Voting)

Oct 7-31

  • Stop in at your Town Office during open hours (see below) to request an absentee ballot
  • Fill it out on the spot and return it to your clerk. (Or take it with you and return it later.)
  • You can do this even if you’ve already requested an absentee ballot because the clerk will update your voting record so you can only vote once.

PROS

You can be sure that the Town Clerk has received your ballot and it will be counted. You can vote on your schedule. You may choose to take your ballot with you and return it later. You may also take your time because there are also 5 questions on this ballot to answer (see below). Getting your vote early is exciting AND it will remove your name from receiving Get Out The Vote phone calls and canvasser visits!

Vote in Person on

Election Day

Tues, Nov 5

  • All polls are open from 8 AM to 8 PM on Election Day.
  • Visit your local polling place (see below).
  • Cast your vote in person.
  • Remember to be ready to vote on the 5 questions (see below).

PROS

You can be sure your vote has been received and will be counted. AND you get a sticker! 😉

Need to Register for the first time or in a new town? No problem in Maine. You may register to vote at your town office at the same time you pick up your ballot or on Election Day when you vote. If you want to register online (NEW) or by mail, the deadline is Oct. 15.
