14 Nov 2022 Lincoln County Stays Blue: 2022 Election Recap
»Jump to Full Election Results
A campaign that kicked off in February ended November 8 with a large turnout for Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. Democrats were on the ballot in Lincoln County in 12 races, and won 10 of those contests.
Voters re-elected Democrats Gov. Janet Mills, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree (ME01), state Sen. Eloise Vitelli (SD24), state Representatives Holly Stover (HD48) and Lydia Crafts (HD46) and County Commissioner William (Bill) Blodgett (D2), all of whom ran in contested races. District Attorney Natasha Irving and Sheriff Todd Brackett, both Democrats, ran unopposed.
Cameron Reny, candidate for Maine Senate District 13, won her race by nearly 2,000 votes and Clinton (Clint) Collamore Sr., was elected to Maine House District 45.
Wins like those in Lincoln County were seen all across the state. Democrats will maintain the majority in the Maine Senate, with 22 Democrats and 13 Republicans. In the House, Democrats grew their majority by six seats. The new legislature will have 82 Democrats, 67 Republicans and two independents.
It was an historic day across the state, with the re-election of Maine’s first woman governor. The 131st Maine Legislature will also be among the most diverse in history. Voters elected Deqa Delac of South Portland and Mana Abdi of Lewiston, the first Somali Americans to serve in the House; Jane Dutson of Portland, the first Black woman to serve in the Maine Senate; and Ambureen Rana of Bangor, the first LGBTQ+ woman of color to serve in the House.
Early reports indicate voter turnout was significantly higher around the state compared to the 2018 midterm elections, and candidates on the ballot in Lincoln County saw larger margins of victory than recorded four years ago. (See results for all contested races in the tables below.)
Gov. Mills won all but five towns in the county and bested her Republican opponent, former Gov. Paul LePage, by 3,109 votes. That’s more than double her margin of victory in 2018, when she garnered 1,352 more votes than Republican Shawn Moody.
“Our candidates ran positive campaigns, focusing on ways to work together to find solutions to challenges facing families, businesses and workers in Lincoln County,” said Kelli Whitlock Burton, vice chair and 2022 campaign leader for the Lincoln County Democratic Committee (LCDC). “Most voters really seemed to respond to that inclusive and positive message.”
Even in the two most challenging districts in Lincoln County, which include the towns of Dresden and Somerville, Democrats turned out in large numbers. Jane Beckwith lost her race for Maine House District 53 to an incumbent, and Pamela Swift finished second in a three-way race for Maine House District 62.
An ambitious campaign to get out the vote (GOTV) began the Thursday before the election, led by the Maine Democratic Party and LCDC. Volunteers completed 174 canvassing shifts in six days, knocking more than 5,000 doors and talking to more than 1,500 voters all across Lincoln County. Those numbers far exceeded the goal set by the state party for Lincoln County.
Prior to GOTV, volunteers here talked to voters in more than 3,000 homes around the county. Campaign efforts also include a successful letters-to-the-editor initiative, a postcard campaign, hand-painted campaign signs, a video series, social media campaigns, a campaign website, monthly newsletter and volunteer staffing of a busy campaign headquarters in Newcastle.
More than 120 people volunteered for these and other projects. Local Democratic committees also played a key role in the campaign’s success. After a successful local organizing effort during the summer, 17 of Lincoln County’s 19 towns had active town committees. The groups heard from candidates, helped organize canvasses, placed campaign signs and wrote letters to the editor.
“Our municipal committees were led by a combination of long-time local Democratic activists and newly engaged, highly motivated volunteers determined to give our candidates their full support,” said Howard Waxman, LCDC campaign manager. “Working together with passionate enthusiasm, they were a critical component of our success in Lincoln County.”
